Applied Research and Development

Operation of a test site (60kWp) for PV systems on the roof of the Photovoltaic Laboratory in Burgdorf.

Long term measurement at over 40 grid-connected PV-plants

At the moment 10 plants are monitored analytically with detailed measurements (in-plane solar radiation with a pyranometer and a reference cell, module temperature, ambient temperatures, DC current, DC voltage, AC power, line voltage).

All other plants in Burgdorf are monitored with a non-detailed measurement (solar radiation and temperature measured at a central point, AC power registered at each plant).

PV plants with detailed measurement

Tests of grid-connected PV inverters

with the high-stable computerized solar generator simulators and with special test equipment for PV systems.

Tests of stand-alone PV inverters

with a large battery bank and special test equipment for PV systems.

Blitztest an einem Solarmodul

Lightning and overvoltage protection as well as EMC of PV systems

  • Tests of lightning current sensitivity of PV modules
  • Tests of lightning protection of PV plants, concepts of protection
  • Tests of insulation resistance of PV modules
  • Measurement of emitting RF interferences (voltages, currents and fields)

An EU(JOULE)-project (project partners: FhG/ISE /BRD and KEMA /NL) about EMC and lightning protection was carried out 1998-2000.

Safety devices for PV systems

  • DC error protection switch (nominal current 30 A, sensitivity DI 5mA=)
  • Electric arc detector (cooperation with Alpha Real, EU-project (JOULE ))
